Doctoral School of Biology Conference 2024 Report

SUMMARY

On December 3, the third Annual Conference of the ELTE Biology Doctoral School co-organized by the HUN-REN Research Center for Natural Sciences (TTK) took place at the nearby HUN-REN TTK building. The event's goal was for PhD students to practice their presentation skills, thereby to get to know each other better, learn about their peers' research and broaden their knowledge.

The conference featured all the programs of the Biology Doctoral School (Ecology and Evolution; Ethology; Structural Biochemistry; Genetics; Immunology; Zootaxonomy, Animal Ecology, Hydrobiology; Neuroscience and Human Biology; Experimental Plant Biology; Molecular Cell and Neurobiology), providing a broad overview of the PhD students' research. The young researchers presented their results in ten-minute talks and in so-called flash poster presentations (which consisted of 3 minutes talks and 1 slide). This year’s program included 12 ten-minute presentations and 26 flash poster presentations, during which the audience had the opportunity to learn about research topics from the broadest areas of biology, ranging from molecular and cell biology to ecology, ethology, and conservation biology.

At the event, two plenary lectures were delivered. In the morning session, Tibor Erős, Head of the Fish and Conservation Ecology Research Group at the HUN-REN Balaton Limnological Research Institute, gave a lecture titled “Saving freshwater biodiversity: Sustainable water management and land use design in the Anthropocene.” The afternoon plenary lecture was delivered by András Málnási-Csizmadia (Full Professor at ELTE Faculty of Sciences, Department of Biochemistry, and Head of Motorpharma Ltd.), who joined us on-line from Boston to present his fascinating lecture titled “Drug development targeting motor proteins.”

Biocenter Ltd. participated in the event as an exhibiting company, while the Junior Section of the Hungarian Biochemical Society and the Hungarian Association of Biotechnology Students also introduced themselves with short presentations.

The best speakers and flash poster presenters of the conference were awarded. Dorottya Károlyi (from the Molecular Cell and Neurobiology program) and Levente Zsichla (from the Ecology and Evolution program) received awards as the two best speakers, while Álmos Tilajka (from the Structural Biochemistry program) and Réka Szilágyi (from the Ecology and Evolution program) were recognized as the best flash poster presenters, receiving certificates accompanied by a modest cash prize. Congratulations to the awardees, and we wish them continued success in their research endeavors!

See you again next year!
